Mechanical Design Engineer

Mechanical design and integration

Overview

This role covers the mechanical design and integration of unmanned aircraft, including mechanisms, secondary structures and equipment installations. The engineer maintains the master CAD assembly, configuration and bill of materials, and leads aircraft assembly and integration.

Core responsibilities

  • Design mechanisms and secondary structure, including quick-release joints, booms, landing gear, and equipment and engine mounts, applying DFM and DFA principles during CAD design. Coordinate analysis with the aerostructures engineer and engine requirements with the propulsion engineer.
  • Own the master CAD assembly, configuration management and CAD-based bill of materials; control every part, revision and drawing, and administer engineering changes (ECO/ECN).
  • Prepare production drawings with GD&T; prototype parts by 3D printing and basic machining, and test them for fit and function.
  • Design test fixtures and conduct structural tests with the aerostructures engineer.
  • Lead aircraft assembly, system installation, and weight and balance; plan equipment packaging and harness routing with the electrical and avionics engineers.
  • Design auxiliary systems such as transport cases, packaging and ground station equipment.
  • Support ground and flight testing; analyse flight logs with the other engineers to investigate vibration and installation issues, and document designs, tests and decisions.

Qualifications

Essential

  • B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 0–1 year of experience.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (preferably SolidWorks), including production drawings with GD&T.
  • Knowledge of mechanism, fastener and joint design.
  • Experience of 3D printing for prototyping.
  • Hands-on assembly skills with hand tools.

Preferred

  • Experience participating in SAE Aero Design, Aerothon, SAE BAJA, Formula SAE or a similar vehicle or aircraft competition.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems, including wiring diagrams, connectors, and harness and tubing routing in CAD.
  • Understanding of lathe, milling and CNC/CAM processes for design for manufacture (DFM).
  • Familiarity with PDM or configuration-management tools, and experience generating production-ready parametric models from imported STEP/IGES geometry.
  • Soldering skills.
  • Programming in Python for automation.
