Electrical Engineer

Electrical and power systems

Overview

This role covers the design, development and integration of electrical and power systems for unmanned aircraft. Responsibilities include electric propulsion, power distribution and wiring, from component selection and system sizing through bench testing and aircraft integration.

Core responsibilities

  • Select motors, propellers, ESCs and batteries, and size the electric propulsion system for the required thrust and endurance.
  • Design the power architecture, including power distribution boards, regulation, protection and battery management, with PCB layouts that meet power-integrity (PI) and signal-integrity (SI) requirements.
  • Design and build wiring harnesses, including wire sizing, connector selection, routing drawings and fabrication.
  • Characterise battery and electric propulsion performance and reliability. Develop measurement and data-logging set-ups, and instrument engine test benches with the propulsion engineer.
  • Integrate electrical and avionics systems on the aircraft with the avionics engineer, and carry out subsystem-level functional testing.
  • Support ground and flight testing, and analyse flight logs to assess power demand, battery behaviour and electric propulsion performance.
  • Document electrical designs, wiring and interface definitions, test procedures, results and engineering decisions.

Qualifications

Essential

  • B.E./B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Instrumentation, or Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering.
  • 0–1 year of experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical drives, including BLDC motor and servo control, ESCs and Li-ion/LiPo batteries.
  • Schematic and PCB design in any ECAD software (KiCad, Altium, OrCAD or equivalent).
  • Fundamentals of signal and power integrity (SI/PI): current-carrying trace design, decoupling, grounding and thermal management; basic signals and communication concepts for avionics integration.
  • Soldering skills, and the use of lab instruments (multimeter, oscilloscope and bench power supply).

Preferred

  • Experience of building a drone, robot or electric vehicle for eBAJA SAEINDIA, DD Robocon, SAE Aero Design or a similar competition or project.
  • Soldering and crimping workmanship aligned with IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620 acceptance criteria.
  • Knowledge of battery management systems.
  • Experience with data-acquisition hardware and sensors.
  • Programming in Python for test automation and data analysis.
