Overview
This role covers the design, development and integration of avionics and communications systems for unmanned aircraft. Responsibilities include avionics architecture, interface electronics, payload integration and RF datalinks, with validation through bench, ground and flight testing.
Core responsibilities
- Define the avionics architecture, covering the autopilot, GNSS, sensors, radios, servos and payload interfaces.
- Design interface and carrier boards around radio and compute modules, from schematic and PCB layout (including RF and high-speed layout) through prototype validation and production support, meeting signal-integrity (SI) and power-integrity (PI) requirements.
- Integrate payloads, including camera and gimbal interfaces, video and control links, and bench set-ups.
- Carry out RF work, including link budgets, antenna selection and placement, RF bench tests with a VNA, spectrum analyser and signal generator, and range trials.
- Verify failsafe and link-loss behaviour, and apply EMI-aware layout and installation practices.
- Support ground and flight testing; analyse flight logs to assess sensor, telemetry and link performance, and document designs, tests and decisions.
Qualifications
Essential
- B.E./B.Tech in Electronics & Communication or Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
- 0–1 year of experience.
- Knowledge of embedded interfaces: UART, CAN, SPI/I2C and Ethernet.
- Knowledge of RF fundamentals.
- Experience with PCB layout, including RF layout, in any ECAD software (academic or internship projects are acceptable).
- Fundamentals of signal and power integrity (SI/PI): controlled impedance, high-speed routing, grounding and decoupling.
- Soldering skills, and the use of lab instruments.
Preferred
- Experience of building a drone or robot for a competition or project.
- Experience with software-defined radio.
- Knowledge of antenna design and measurement.
- Experience with SI/PI or EM simulation tools (HyperLynx, SIwave, Sigrity or equivalent).
- Familiarity with Linux and networking.
- Python test scripting and Wireshark.
